"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication"

Adapting a complex theoretical framework into a straightforward, user-friendly learning platform is no easy task. Our team knew this much from the conceptual stage. The rich information in Jenkins’ book, ranging from media trends and concepts to real life cases, had to be condensed in such a way that the obvious content is subtracted, and the significant enhanced. This proved challenging at times, as the source material is quite comprehensive and our wish was to provide a thorough yet concise introduction to Convergence Culture.

As the editor I made the decision to stay true to the author’s use of industry lingo and formal tone of voice, under the assumption that the core target audience, consisting of media professionals, students and savvy media users, prefers a professional approach to learning. Nevertheless, I simplified the reading experience by using the same template for each chapter, starting with an introduction to the topic and key concepts, followed by an example, conclusions and implications and a teaser for the next chapter. I allowed myself more latitude when writing the team biographies, as it seemed appropriate to use a lighter, more personal tone when introducing us students. In consultation with the team I also compiled supplementary content, including related research data, a definitions glossary and a set of practice questions for each chapter, to be used in the website as interactive elements, in order to keep users engaged and enhance their learning.

Creating content for online learning has brought me to the conclusion that there are three elements without which our core message would not have been clearly communicated: (1) Simplicity; focus on key concepts, scrap redundant information and organize the flow of information in a logical way, (2) Repetition; introduce concepts and ideas multiple times, through various examples and viewpoints to enhance understanding and application of theory, and (3) Interactivity; include interactive elements to engage, maintain interest and improve learning skills.
